Mitsubishis Gst Motor Corp. on Thursday announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Eclipse GmTec Corp. for $8.6 billion, the Japanese automaker said in a statement.
The deal is expected to close in early 2018.
The combined company will be Mitsubishes Gst’s largest ever acquisition.
The Japanese automakers first acquired Eclipse in the early 2000s for $9.9 million.
Eclipse is one of the largest automakers in the U.S., producing more than 100 models, including the Subaru Impreza, Volkswagen Golf, Hyundai Sonata, Infiniti QX80, Scion iQ, Subaru WRX, Scion XB and many others.
Mitsubishing has also invested $1 billion in Gmts GT Advanced technology, which was used in Subaru’s WRX and other models.
Eclipse will remain the U and global leader in fuel economy and fuel efficiency.
